MARINE LITTER
Marine litter is a serious global problem whose impacts spread far beyond the world’s populated areas. Litter reaches all corners of the planet, landing on uninhabited islands, spreading through pristine Arctic waters, and sinking into the deep seas through wind and ocean currents.
At least 11 million tonnes of plastic enter the world’s oceans every year; equivalent to the contents of one garbage truck being dumped into the sea every minute, creating substantial threats to the marine ecosystem and to humans.
In Hong Kong, our precious marine environment is under constant assault from litter that must be stemmed to protect ecologically valuable marine habitats. See how we're working to tackle the marine litter problem at source.
